Basically a solar or photovoltaic cell is a device made from semi-conducting materials such as silicon that converts light energy into electrical energy by the Photovoltaic effect.
Photovoltaic or PV (photo = light, volt = unit of electrical current) cells work simply by photons in the sunlight being absorbed within the semiconductor material such as silicon in the cells , negatively charged electrons are then knocked loose from their atoms allowing them to flow to produce electricity.
