Types of Rechargeable Batteries
Types of Rechargeable Dry Cell Batteries
General purpose rechargeable batteries including Nickel cadmium, Nickel metal hydride and Lithium-Ion batteries are used in a variety of uses including toys, torches, solar garden lights, mobile phones, calculators + many more uses.
Ni-Cd
Nickel cadmium (Ni-Cd)
Used for toys torches, remote controls etc, with an average life of 4-5 years and in many cases can be charged up to 1000 times. Ni-cd batteries are toxic and recycling as with all batteries is required. Ni-Cd batteries are available in the same general purpose physical sizes as alkaline batteries, each cell has a nominal potential of 1.2 volts, compared to the nominal 1.5 volt potential for alkaline batteries.
Ni-Mh
Nickel metal hydride (Ni-Mh)
For high drain digital devices where weight is of primary importance, Ni-Mh batteries are a better choice battery to NiCd batteries and are considered to be a more environmentally friendly battery as Cadmium used in the Ni-Cd is poisonous, with an average life of 4-5 years and in many cases can be charged up to 1000 times. As Ni-Cd batteries each cell has a nominal potential of 1.2 volts, compared to the nominal 1.5 volt potential for alkaline batteries.
Li-Ion
Lithium ion (Li-Ion) batteries
Li-Ion batteries have a greater energy storage capacity than Ni-Cd and Ni-Mh batteries, and can be found in many consumer electronics such as mobile phones etc. many solar light manufacturers are now fitting Li-Ion batteries to give a longer light. Li-ion batteries are lighter than other equivalents with one of the best energy-to-weight ratios. Li-Ion batteries operate at higher voltages than NiCd & Ni-Mh batteries, typically 3.7 volts compared to 1.2volts.
Q&A
What does the battery mAh rating mean?
The Energy storage of a battery is measured in milli-amp hour (mAh).
A 750mAh battery could for one hour at a 750mA discharge rate.
The higher the mAh rating the more energy the battery can store and the longer the battery can supply power to an electrical device at a given discharge rate.
How can I get the longest life out of a rechargeable battery?
Keep Rechargeable Batteries dry at all times.
Avoid dropping the batteries on a hard surface as this may damage them or cause a leakage.
Do not carry batteries loose in a pocket as contact between them can short them out and cause them to get hot.
Do not overcharge batteries.
Remove batteries from a device when not in use for a long periods of time.
Excessive exposure to heat may compromise the battery quality.
Advantages of using Recargeable batteries
Rechargeable batteries offer environmental and economic benefits when used as an alternative to disposable batteries.
Because rechargeable technology has improved over the years, current rechargeable are outperforming the best alkaline in high-drain appliances such as digital cameras.
Billions of ordinary batteries are thrown away every year, all of which end up in landfill sites. Rechargeable batteries can be used again and again which helps reduce the impact disposable batteries have on the environment.
The average cost of recharging 4 rechargeable batteries is between 1p-2p, so just imagine how much you can save compared to the cost of alkaline batteries.
